The Final Analysis

I tend to walk in circles. This makes it difficult even if you do know which direction is which. The easiest way I have found to walk a straight line is to pick a landmark where you are standing and then pick one ahead of you in the direction you intend to go. Continue picking new landmarks as you walk to stay on a straight line. This will save you the trouble of having to use one of the above techniques to determine direction every 100 yards.

A GPS, compass and map are always the best way to stay on course. In a survival situation however, these luxuries may not be available. The techniques I have described will give you a general idea of direction, so it is imperative that you always know what direction home or help lies in before setting out.

If given a choice, it is always best to hunt with a partner. Know where the other is hunting, and have a plan made about what to do if one of you do not show up. If you choose to hunt alone, let someone know where you will be and what time he or she should expect you home. People get lost everyday, and most of the time it is quite avoidable. Knowing what to do when you find that you are lost and having a preset plan, can save you time, headaches, and possibly your life.

Sidebar: If you were to get lost and for whatever reason could not find your way, you would need to start thinking in terms of long term survival. Warmth, shelter, food and water are essential to long term survival. To take an extra step towards being safe in all conditions, it is a good idea to invest in a survival kit and carry it with you when you travel outdoors. You can find them in most any sporting goods store or even your local Wal-Mart. Think of it as an insurance policy. If you would like to put your own together, try to include the following items.
